Frequently Asked Questions
General & Mission
What is the Taitokerau Education Trust?
Taitokerau Education Trust works to close the digital divide across Northland. We partner with local schools, communities, and ICT providers to ensure ākonga (students) and their whānau have affordable access to personal digital devices, home connectivity, and digital learning support.
Why is digital access important for our tamariki?
Modern education increasingly relies on e-learning tools, online research, and collaborative platforms. Having a dedicated personal device and home internet allows ākonga to learn anytime, anywhere, and at their own pace—ensuring no student is left behind due to financial barriers.
Chromebooks & Device Purchasing
How does the Chromebook payment plan work?
We partner with participating schools to offer low-cost, interest-free payment options for Chromebooks. Whānau can pay off the device through small, manageable weekly or monthly installments rather than paying a large upfront cost.
What happens if a device gets damaged, lost, or stolen?
Devices ordered through the Trust’s program include commercial warranties and integrated insurance coverage. If a device breaks or goes missing, contact your school’s digital coordinator or our whānau support team to lodge a repair or replacement claim.
Does my child own the Chromebook once it's paid off?
Yes. Once the payment plan is complete, the Chromebook belongs entirely to your whānau.
Home Internet & Connectivity
The Trust partners with network providers (such as Northpower Fibre and Our Net) to deliver subsidized or low-cost home broadband to eligible households with school-aged tamariki.
How can we get affordable internet for our home?
Households with school-aged tamariki who do not currently have a fibre connection may qualify. Eligibility includes families attending schools in higher equity index/equity-funded areas (EQI 490+), kaumātua (65+) with a SuperGold Card, or families living in social housing.
Who qualifies for the subsidized home internet program?
You can apply directly through our online application form on the website or reach out to your child’s participating school. Our Whānau Support team will guide you through verifying your address and setting up the connection.
How do I apply for home internet assistance?
Whānau Support & Safety
School-issued devices operate under network filtering systems that block inappropriate sites and online hazards. Additionally, schools may provide digital citizenship education to teach tamariki how to stay safe and responsible online.
How are students protected online while using these devices?
You can get in touch with our Whānau Support team by visiting our Contact Us page or emailing us directly at whangarei@taitokerau.education. We are here to help adjust payment schedules if your financial situation changes.
